Spinout and Commercial Intelligence

Spinout Activities

We engage in a number of activities that inform the likely commercial appetite for new innovations and commercial development strategies. We also direct the commercial development of potential new ventures for the University, and manage the relationship between the University and its portfolio of spinout companies.

The type of activities we engage in include:

  • Market Evaluation & Analysis

    Investigations into the nature and size of commercial markets for new innovations.
  • Partner Identification

    Identification of potential licensees, customers, partners and collaborators.
  • Advice

    Advice in relation to the commercial maturity of innovations, and appropriate commercial strategy;
  • Proof of Concept

    Support in understanding proof of concept requirements;
  • Commercial Team Development

    Sourcing/screening of potential commercial management;
  • Business Planning

    Support in developing and validating business plans;
  • Fundraising

    Links to sources of finance (proof of concept, seed and later stage investment) and assistance in pitch preparation;
  • Guidance

    Guidance through the University's spinout development decision making procedures;
  • Negotiation

    Negotiation of spinout related agreements, on behalf of the University;
  • Shareholder Management

    On-going shareholder support to existing spinout companies including occasional board roles. We are the direct line of communication to the University as a shareholder.
  • Information

    Links to sources of funding, professional advisors, and networking and training opportunities.

Spinout Company Development

As well as supporting our existing spinout companies through access to information and resources, we proactively support academics who are considering the formation of a new spinout company as a means to commercialise intellectual property emerging from their academic group.

We provide:

  • Advice in relation to the appropriateness of spinning out as a course of action;
  • Sourcing/screening of potential commercial management;
  • Support in understanding proof of concept requirements;
  • Links to sources of finance (proof of concept, seed and later stage investment);
  • Support in developing and validating the business plan;
  • Guidance through the spinout development decision making procedures;
  • Guidance through the spinout development decision making procedures;
  • On-going shareholder support to existing spinout companies;

Spinout Manual

"A rigorous approach is taken in relation to the development of spinout companies. Accordingly, a Spinout Manual has recently been established that provides further information to academics on the considerations and processes in relation to spinout development."
