BizzInn is an initiative hosted by the University of Birmingham and run by the Enterprise Acceleration Team. The team encourages and accelerates enterprise activities at the University of Birmingham. In particular, we support, advise and work with:
We encourage the transfer of ideas and expertise to business through enterprise training and networking events. We validate, develop, and grow commercial ventures, through a mixture of hands-on support, access to a wide network of service providers, investors and entrepreneurs, and funding through early stage support grants. We direct the commercial development of potential new ventures for the University, and manage the relationship with the University’s portfolio of spinout companies. The team also works with Alta Innovations (the University’s technology transfer company) who are responsible for consultancy, IP management, and licensing.
We provide an integrated network of business support for entrepreneurs, start-ups and academics helping to transform innovation into enterprise. To create a thriving entrepreneurial community that supports research and innovation led enterprise, and which creates economic impact and societal benefit.
Head of Enterprise Acceleration & Head of Spinout Portfolio
Leads the Enterprise Acceleration Team, helping to ensure integrated support is provided for both academics and start-up companies. David also leads the support for existing spinout companies and development of new high quality University ventures.
David has many years technology transfer experience gained at both Imperial Innovations and University of Bath, where he also acted as Head of Technology Transfer and Consultancy for Bath Ventures in its first year of operation. As well as significant experience in intellectual property and licensing, he has successfully spun-out a number of companies, helping to bring in management talent and investment along the way, and regularly participating as a Director or observer on the board of companies. David joined the University of Birmingham in May 2010 and established the Enterprise Acceleration Team in June 2013.

BizzInn Incubation Manager
Andrew is responsible for the day to day management of BizzInn and ensuring that clients gain access to the advice and support that enables them to turn their business idea into reality.
Andrew has many years experience of working with businesses - coaching and supporting them on strategic planning, skills development, and financial and marketing needs. He has a particular interest in working with start-up businesses to ensure that they are able to develop their plans and begin trading. Andrew has also worked with regional business support agencies and organisations, developing networks and helping businesses to access the latest support initiatives.

Business Intelligence Manager
Market research and business case development on IP, spinouts & strategic business partnerships and initiatives.
Steve joined the University of Birmingham in February 2010 with 8 years of experience working in Corporate Finance, where he headed up a team of research analysts working on Mergers & Acquisitions, Commercial Due Diligence, Company Valuations, Investment Analysis, and Independent Business Reviews. He is responsible for providing all the market research analysis and commercial intelligence to support the strategic decisions for commercialising IP generated by the University’s academics.
Steve moved into a career in Corporate Finance following completion of his MBA at Birmingham Business School having previously had a career in enterprise software development subsequent to completion of his PhD in Chemical Engineering, also at the University of Birmingham.

Academic Enterprise Manager
Supports enterprising academics commercialise their research through the development of enterprise training programmes, commercial skills initiatives, networking activities events and competitions.
Sofia completed a degree in English Literature and Media Communications and has worked in a variety of business, marketing, and event related roles since. She first joined University of Birmingham in 2006 working with the Graduate School, organising training events specifically for PhD researchers. She also spent 3 years working for a niche educational consultancy in a sales and marketing role which gave her a good understanding of small business needs.
